At the time it was Transportation.

The ACC had a rule within the conference that only way for teams to travel to games was a bus or van. There was only exception was 1 game out of conference each year and post season NCAA. It was easy to get to DC on US29 from Greensboro through Charlottesville and apparently easy to get to Clemson and Columbia.

Apparently US460 stunk in 1953 and the other schools didn't want to drive it. There were no interstate highways then. Also VT wasn't a 30000 strong student population in 1953. BTW they didn't want to drive the roads to Morgantown either then.

An interesting tidbit that many don't know is that Florida (Gators) inquired in the 1970s about joining the ACC because their President thought it would help Florida reach AAU status. ACC turned them down flat. Too much trouble to drive to Gainesville during the week from College Park for a basketball game.
